UKS Culture Show 2008: Tum Teav (9/9)

Organization: UCLA United Khmer Students Event: UKS Culture Show 2008: Tum Teav Date: April 19, 2008 Location: Freud Playhouse, UCLA Tum Teav is a classic tragic love story that has been told throughout Cambodia since at least the middle of the 19th century. It is originally based on a poem. It was popularized by writer George Chigas and has been a compulsory part of the Cambodian secondary national curriculum since the 1950s, akin to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in western education. As with any oral tradition, pinning down the origins of the story is an elusive task. The story is believed to have originated in the 17th or 18th century and is set in Kampong Cham around a century earlier. However in some versions the king in question is purported to be the Rea-mea who reigned in the mid-1600s, coming to the throne through an act of regicide and subsequently converting to Islam. The tale relates the encounters of a talented novice monk named Tum and a beautiful adolescent girl named Teav. From the first sight, Tum, the monk, was in love with Teav, a very beautiful young lady. It is reciprocated and Teav offered Tum some betel nut and a blanket as evidence of the feelings she had for Tum and prays to Buddha that the young monk will be with her for eternity. Tum was very pleased to accept the offers, to see she felt the same way he did. He initially spends some time in Teav’s home despite her being ‘in the shade’ (a period of a few weeks when the daughter is supposedly

Oscar-Nominated Actress Jill Clayburgh Dead at 66

Jill Clayburgh, the sophisticated Hollywood and Broadway actress known for portrayals of empowered women in a career spanning five decades, highlighted by her Oscar-nominated role of a divorcee exploring life after marriage in the 1978 film “An Unmarried Woman,” has died. She was 66. Her husband, Tony Award-winning playwright David Rabe, said Clayburgh died Friday surrounded by her family at her home in Lakeville, Conn., after a 21-year battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. He said she dealt with the disease courageously, quietly and privately, “and made it into an opportunity for her children to grow and be human.” Clayburgh, alongside such peers as Anne Bancroft, Shirley MacLaine and Jane Fonda, helped to usher in a new era for actresses in Hollywood by playing women who were confident and capable yet not completely flawless. Her dramatic turn as a divorcee exploring her sexuality after 16 years of marriage in “An Unmarried Woman” earned Clayburgh her first Oscar nod. “There was practically nothing for women to do on the screen in the 1950s and 1960s,” Clayburgh said in an interview with The Associated Press while promoting “An Unmarried Woman” in 1978. “Sure, Marilyn Monroe was great, but she had to play a one-sided character, a vulnerable sex object. It was a real fantasy.” The next year, Clayburgh was again nominated for an Academy Award for “Starting Over,” a comedy about a divorced man, played by Burt Reynolds, who falls in love but can’t get over his ex-wife

Play House

The two coolest things I ever made play with the coolest thing I made this week. Julian and Eloise consented to taking simultaneous two-hour naps, which allowed me time to make them this play house out of the box our grill came in. I modeled it after your basic Little Tikes playhouse, and they seem to love it just as much as the fancy ones. Watching them squeal and play with it for a solid half hour was immensely gratifying. Totally worth giving up my free time to carve up corrugated cardboard with a dull x-acto knife. It is still a work in progress. I have big plans. Skylights and curtains for the door window are next.

Tim and Irene – Gardens Residents

Found The Gardens via the internet. Wanted a house that we could park the RV beside. The reception that we got while visiting really sold us on The Gardens. Made us feel at “home”. It is the friendliest place I [Irene] has ever been. Tim Wilson, Developer, offered fully customizable house plans. Greg, the general contractor, was very helpful during the construction and we even made a few changes. Our garage has two entrances, one from the laundry room off of kitchen to load food. The other is off the master bedroom so we can load clothes with ease. Our garage is 67 feet long and 16 feet wide so we can park RV and towed vehicle. NO WINTERIZING the RV again. Crossville is extremely friendly. The Cumberland County Playhouse is really fun to go to. This small town has lots of activities. Cumberland Mountain State park is beautiful and on the edge of town. Tennessee has 53 state parks and they are many only 1 to 2 hours drive from Crossville.

ASYLUM 11: Promo Trailer

Robert Campbell’s ASYLUM 11, a: theatrical one-man show / movie / comic book / concert, is previewed in this promo trailer. The show has performed at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Gretna Theatre’s “Monday Night Series,” at Gamut Theatre Group as a “Core Company Spotlight” Production (the first such production at this company) and in an educational theatre residency experience at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. The show was workshopped at Penn State’s Outlaws Playwright’s Workshop and State College, PA’s Boal Barn Playhouse. It was developed as Campbell’s Honors Thesis in Theatre for Penn State’s School of Theatre and Schreyer Honors College. The show was a collaborative effort between Robert Campbell (Writer, Director, Editor, Designer, Producer, Actor), PSU Communications professor T. Martin Camden III (Cinematographer, Co-Editor, Story Consultation, Video Technician… “Marty” to his friends), and Marty’s wife Kelly (Producer, Story Consultation, Actor). It first appeared in workshop form in 2002 and had its professional debut (Philly Fringe) in 2003. In each subsequent performance, Campbell has revised, reshot, re-staged and re-edited in a (probably neverending) cycle of “tweaking” the show’s theatrical effectiveness. Future plans include to (hopefully) take the show to The Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland and The NYC International Fringe. One ideal audience for ASYLUM 11 would be Comic Book Conventions. Another would be as an indoor sideshow attraction

Although their exact age is a “Professional Secret”, as the girls say, their music is truly ageless. As children, they were raised both in the Panama Canal Zone and Washington DC. Their beloved father sensed an innate ability for musical performance and he gave them three identical Martin guitars, the very guitars they play today. Can’t tell who is who? They began their performance career as dancers. After high school they moved to Hollywood to pursue their singing careers. “We had no coach”, says lead guitarist Milly. “We learned by listening to records of our favorite singers”. They became a successful trio that toured along with Bob Hope on his numerous USO appearances. The sisters had to leave Mr. Hope to care for their ailing Mother. They were

Just Friends – a JoBro Fanfic (Chapter 56 Part 1)

Chapter 56 Part 1: *Julie’s POV* The morning after our dinner plan for Joe and Kim that didn’t seem to go too well, I decided to go see what Kevin was up to. I knocked as I opened the door and saw Kevin come out of his room. “Morning.” I said quietly. It was about 10:00am, but I wasnt sure if anyone was still asleep. “Hello beautiful.” Kevin said as he gave me a quick kiss. I smiled at Kevin. He always knew how to make me feel special. “So, um, how is Joe? I mean, after Kim left last night?” Kevin sighed and told me everything that happened this morning. “So Nick went over there to talk to Kim about it all.” Kevin said. I started thinking of plans to get Kim and Joe back together when Kevin cupped my face in his hands. “Please stop.” He said sweetly before kissing my forehead. “Stop what?” “I know you are planning some way to get them back together, and that makes you a great friend, but maybe you should relax a little. Let them try working it out on their own. At least theyre talking again.” I nodded. “Yeah, I guess you’re right.” “I am right. So, lets do something today. Just you and me.” “Like what?” I asked. “Anything and everything.” He smiled and got his coat and pulled me out the door. Kevin grabbed my hand and intertwined our fingers as we started walking. I had no idea where we were going, but that made it all the more fun. First, we stopped at a small diner and got some breakfast, which was delicious. Then we walked to Main Street (AN-I just picked a name.) and
