Girl’s Playhouse Plans

Girl’s Playhouse Plans

Little girls love to play house and if you give your child a playhouse of her own, you are actually giving her hours and hours of fun times to play pretend house outside.  Building a girl’s playhouse will mean that your child does not have to play with cardboard boxes or under tables or blankets.  She can have a whale of time in her playhouse, invite her friends over for tea parties and generally have a blast.

Consult your child to find out what her ideas of a playhouse are and then go online to find a girl’s playhouse plans free of cost that you can download.  There are several models available that you can find building plans for.  Go for something distinctive and download the detailed instructions that are part of the plans.  All you will need to do is follow the materials list to buy what is required to build the playhouse and then follow the detailed instructions to construct the playhouse.

You can find girls’ playhouse plans that range from the simple, functional one room playhouse to the more elaborate castle styles.  You can also find multi-functional playhouse designs with a play area for swings and a slide.

Make sure you choose a set of plans that give you complete building instructions down to the smallest detail and not plans that expect you to guess what happens next or fill in the blanks.  Read over the instructions a couple of times to make sure you understand them thoroughly and are fully confident of constructing the playhouse.  Any areas where you have doubts, for example if the roof construction is not too clear, do more research on other sites to see if you can find clearer instructions.

Needless to say you would have to be a skilled do it yourself person to put together a girls playhouse.  If you have doubts about whether you will be able to follow the instructions, get a professional to draw up a set of blueprints and provide detailed instructions. This will be cheaper than if you botch things up and have to do it all over again.  Simple designs are really the best option because the instructions will be easy to follow.

You can build a simple framework and then add to it to give it that distinctive look.  Get your child involved in the project.  Colors and interior decoration should be based on her ideas and she will be thrilled to be a part of the project.  Don’t forget to put her name up on the front and any designs she wants can be stenciled and then painted, or you can get stick on designs.  Girls usually like flower decals and bright, sunny colors.

Don’t forget to include furniture in your budget.  Bean bags or a child’s table and chairs are a good idea so that she has a work space for her activities.  You can always rope in the mother as well and make it a family project.   Mom can help with putting up window boxes with flowers and pretty curtains and door mats.

At the end of it all, you are going to have one overjoyed child.

Free Backyard Playhouse Plans

Free Backyard Playhouse Plans

Children of today are quite savvy in terms of knowing what they want.  As they grow they need their own space and the age at which they need a place to call their own seems be getting younger with each passing year.  As a parent, giving your child a playhouse that is their very own is one of the best things you could do for the child.  Building the playhouse project is a huge learning experience for the child and its involvement in selecting the design, color scheme and interior decoration is actually a form of learning made fun.

Observe children when they play, they are always wanting to play inside cardboard cartons, under tables, making tents out of the bedclothes and constructing their own makeshift structures in the garden.  This comes from an innate sense of wanting a space to call their own and to play in, and the perfect solution is a playhouse.

You don’t have to set aside a huge budget; the project can be completed quite economically in fact.  Go online and find a simple free playhouse plans that you can download and print out.  The sites give full information on how to go about building the playhouse as well as covering the tools and materials you will need.

The important thing is to choose the right location taking into consideration the climatic changes over the seasons, wind chill factor, aesthetics and levelness of the ground.  The design you choose should be simple because that will make it easy to build and also it should not clash too badly with the house or any other structures you may have in your garden.  That is why the backyard is the best place to put the playhouse, not too close to the main house so the child has his or her privacy and is at the same time close enough to the house to call out if help is needed.

When you opt for free playhouse plans taken off the internet you save on the cost of having them drawn up by a professional.  Moreover, since the site provides you with a materials list and instructions on how to build, you don’t need to pay for outside labor.  It can be a do it yourself project that you can involve the whole family in.

Keep in mind that you need to make the structure as secure as possible because children are not the gentlest of creatures at times.  Get all your tools and materials together, stake out the perimeter of the site to set up the boundary line and build your frame.  Put a sheet of polythene on the ground before you lay the frame down, to prevent plants from growing up under the playhouse.  Follow the instructions you have downloaded together with your free playhouse plans and start construction.  Keep a sturdy tarp handy to cover your work when the day is done, this will guard against any sudden squalls of rain you may have.

Using good quality wood and waterproofing after painting is highly recommended.   Good luck with your free playhouse plans.

Do-It-Yourself Playhouse Plans

Do-It-Yourself Playhouse Plans

As a parent your love for your children is very strong and you always try to please them in as many ways as possible. Most children will at some stage ask for a playhouse, it is only natural.  Moreover, a playhouse is a very interesting project to involve children in and while constructing the playhouse the lessons they learn will be quite valuable.

Now you will have to decide how you are going to go about building the playhouse.  Do you buy the plans or trawl the internet for free plans.  You can get some very good detailed plans on the internet that you can download for free, just make sure that they give step-by-step instructions in a clear manner as well as a list of materials required.

Start with planning: decide on the best spot to build the playhouse and then clear the area of debris.  The playhouse should be so located that you can see it from the house, preferably the kitchen window because that’s where families tend to congregate and wives are usually in the kitchen more often than not.  However, it should not be too close to the house because children feel spied upon and the noise levels are sure to deafen you.  Once you have chosen the area mark off the boundary line.  You can do this by driving wooden stakes into the ground and tying strong twine to them.

Now did the holes and insert the fence posts, make sure they stand up straight are all of the same height.  Pour the concrete that you have already mixed into the holes; leave them overnight for the poles to harden and set.

Make the walls by putting up individual sheets of plywood that have been cut to fit between the posts and nail them firmly to the posts.  If you start at the back your mistakes will not be visible and you will also get the hang of it so that the front will look real professional.  The boards should go about an inch off the ground and all the way up the post leaving about 3 or 4 inches off the top.

A good DIYer can fashion a door following the DIY playhouse building plans.  If you are not confident, you can do more research on the internet until you get a very detailed plan for the door.  One option is to call in a professional to make the door and yet another option is to hang a heavy canvas curtain over the doorway.

Make the roof flat topped, this is a less complicated pattern and will provide ample shelter from the rain.  You can create the roof by cutting a plywood sheet to fit from the front wall of the playhouse to the back wall.  Make sure there is a slight overhang on either side, once you have cut it fit snugly between the posts you can nail it down.

Do it yourself playhouse plans are an excellent method of building a playhouse for free and your children will be so proud of you.

Castle Playhouse Plans – Grand Ideas

Castle Playhouse Plans – Grand Ideas

When your children decide that no ordinary playhouse will do for them, only a castle playhouse, you are stumped!  Oh boy, what do you do in this case?  Buying the plans and paying for labor and materials is going to cost a packet that you simply cannot afford.  There’s an easy solution, this article details tips on how you can build a castle playhouse and you can always get free castle playhouse plans off the internet.

Log on to your internet browser and get started.  You will find plenty of pictures and even plans that detail the step-by-step process of building the playhouse.  Don’t forget to make it big enough to hold half the neighborhood children, because it’s going to be a huge crowd puller.

Stock up on building supplies and tools and get going.  Plywood is ideal for building the playhouse and you can add turrets and whatnots to make it look good.  Find yourself a good helper, preferably someone who knows their way around carpentry tools and building materials.  You can plan the measurements in advance and ask the store to cut the sheets for you to the required lengths.  Don’t forget to buy some extra plywood for the crenellated top of the castle.

When building the castle playhouse use wooden stakes nailed or screwed to the insides of the frame and sunk deep into the ground, this will provide additional support and strength to the structure.  All through the building keep in mind the fact that a horde of kids are going to be swarming all over the castle playhouse, so use reinforcements for additional support wherever possible.

Moving on to the construction, you will need to paint the plywood sheets gray (castle color).  Paint over a second time and each time you paint let it dry well.  Once completely dry after the second coat, you should pencil in the blocks and use a darker shade of gray to paint over the markings to give it the stone blocks effect.  You should end with a coat of waterproof sealant and leave to dry.

Then build the frame and waterproof it.  After it is dry you can start nailing the walls to the frame, needless to say the walls too should be painted and waterproofed before you put them up.  You can make the front of the castle as decorative and attractive as you choose but follow your castle playhouse plans carefully because you definitely do not want a funny looking entrance to the castle.

You could paint the roof and drawbridge of the castle the same color and then waterproof them and let it dry.  Make sure when fixing the ropes for the drawbridge that they are at the right height for a child to pull on to raise and lower the drawbridge.  Don’t forget to add colorful pennants to the castle walls.  You can use felt or vinyl of bright colors for the pennants; staple them to wooden dowels, drill holes in the frame and glue them into the holes.

Well now, your castle playhouse is ready, so lower the drawbridge, throw open wide the castle doors and bring on the kids!

Kids Playhouse Plans – Double Fun With a Two Storey

Kids Playhouse Plans – Double Fun With A Two Storey

What do you do when your children insist on having a playhouse and not just any playhouse, a two storey playhouse? Well build it for them of course after you have tried every which way possible to dissuade them from the idea! This article focuses on some interesting facts about kids’ playhouse plans for a two storey playhouse.  Once you get used to the idea, you will become quite excited about the project because a two storey playhouse is not to be found very often.

To begin with building a two storey playhouse is not at all a difficult task.  What you will need to do is first go online and look at designs and kids’ playhouse plans to see which one fits the bill for your requirements.  Once you have the plans, if it is a free site you can download them to your computer and print them off.  Some sites charge for the plans but it is still worth it as they are far less expensive than getting a professional to draw them for you.  An added benefit in buying them online is that they come complete with instructions, materials to be used and the tools you will need.  You can also get tips and safety instructions included in the pack.

Once the plan is finalized and don’t forget the important part, involving your kids in the selection, it is after all their playhouse, get on to your zoning office and find out if you need permission or a license to carry out the construction.  You may need to contact the municipality for the license so ensure all the formalities are completed before you hammer the first nail.

Now pick a spot in the garden, make sure you find as level a place as possible for the playhouse with good soil drainage and the least amount of plants and greenery. Clear the area and rake it over good to level it even further.

Measure off the boundary line and drive in your stakes to mark the perimeter and tie thick string or twine between them.  Then make the frame and nail it together.  Treat the wood a sealant and waterproof it.  Put a plastic or polythene sheet on the ground and put the frame on top of it.  Once this is done you can move on to nailing in place the corner posts then the inside posts.  The walls are best made out of full sheet plywood that is cut to size and nailed firmly in place.  It is best to waterproof all the wood to be on the safe side.  You can nail strips of wood between the joists for additional support.

Make sure that all windows, the more the merrier, are marked and cut out of the walls before they go up and similarly for the front wall the doorway has to be cut out.  Use two by four pieces of wood to fashion the door frame and the window frames.  Make a header and bottom ridge for the doorway.

Then move on to painting and decorating the play house and here your children will be only too glad to get stuck in so give them free reign.

Free Plans for Outside Playhouse – Making a Fort

Free Plans For Outside Playhouse – Making A Fort

The kids are restless and watching too much TV or else they are glued to the computer or the video games.  You want them outside enjoying the fresh air and getting some exercise.  In your day kids played outdoors and were rarely stuck indoors!  You are looking at all that garden space and suddenly it hits you – why don’t you build them a playhouse, something of their own where they can play and have friends over.  If you build it outdoors at the end of the garden they could very well start world war III and it won’t disturb your peace and quiet.

When you have an all boy’s contingent or even girls who want to be boys, their ideas about what they want for a playhouse seldom conform to yours.  Ask them because it is going to be their play space.  If your kids want a fort, you can easily get a set of free plans for outside playhouse from the internet.  Don’t rush it, take the time to find a really good site that provides you with instructions that you can easily follow and lots of other tips and advice.  Make sure that the materials list is included.

Pick a spot in your garden, level the ground, lay out your materials and tools and get started.  Building a fort for your kids is not a very time consuming or expensive affair and you will earn the undying gratitude of the children.  Keep it simple, you can always decorate once the basic structure is in place.

Follow the instructions given with your plans for the outside playhouse and use plywood to construct the fort playhouse.  Make sure your measurements are accurate and that the fort is wide enough for your children and their friends to play in it.  You will need to buy sandpaper, brown paint, waterproof paint, hinges with screws and some heavy rocks or concrete blocks, all available at your local hardware store.

Prepare your materials and tools and it is advisable to factor in a floor for the fort playhouse, otherwise your kids will be tracking sand into the house every time they play in their fort and it will be worse when it rains because then you will have a house full of mud.

Your first job will be to sand down the wood to remove the splinters, and then line up the walls and mark them off at equidistant points.  Screw in your metal hinges and then stand up the walls.  Now move on to the base; with the outsides standing upright put the plywood in the center of the walls and make sure that the entire structure is level.  Now fix the metal brackets to the floor first at four points and then to the walls.

You could always make a more permanent structure by digging holes and inserting posts, then pouring concrete over it and leaving it to set.  Then the fort structure is constructed inside the joists and firmly nailed in place.  This will give the structure more permanence. When all of this is completed you can start painting the fort and I’m sure you will have many willing hands to help you when you begin and liberally paint spattered children when you end!

Raised Playhouse Plans – How to Build a Playhouse Above Ground

Raised Playhouse Plans – How To Build A Playhouse Above Ground

Every child dreams of owning a playhouse right in their own backyard, playing in a pal’s playhouse is all well and good, but at the end of the day it isn’t theirs.  What do you do when your child wants something a wee bit out of the ordinary?  Your kid wants a raised playhouse, you scratch your head and look blank, and all the time those imploring eyes are staring into yours so you say YES!  Read this article for some information on how to get hold of raised playhouse plans and build one successfully.

Buying a prefabricated playhouse is rather an expensive proposition, so we suggest going online to find free raised playhouse plans.  You will find plenty of sites full of information, pictures, list of materials and tools, advice and much more.  You can always buy the plans online if you want as they come rather cheap or you can download a free set.

Building a raised playhouse is really no different from building an on the ground playhouse.  The only difference with a raised one is that the floor will go several feet above the ground instead of flat on the ground and you will need to build a staircase.  Pick a spot in your garden or backyard; make sure it’s a nice clear spot with plenty of natural light.  Decide on the size of the playhouse based on the plans you have.  Mark of your boundaries and start digging holes, then insert the wooden posts and pour in some concrete and leave it to harden.  This will ensure that the foundation for your playhouse is literally rock solid.  Now all you need to do is follow the plans and construct the playhouse on top of the posts.

When selecting your materials, make sure that they are of good quality and that the fasteners are all galvanized, stainless steel or zinc coated.  You will need to sand down the wood to remove splinters and then start building.  Now follow the instructions given on your raised playhouse plans and you are in business.

You should know that there are all kinds of playhouses as detailed below:

Do It Yourself:

Anyone with a basic knowledge of carpentry and a little bit of an adventurous spirit can build a playhouse quite easily.  Just download the free raised playhouse plans from the internet, pick up the materials listed from the hardware store and get started.  When you build you can be ambitious, rope in your child and add whatever embellishments the two of you can come up with – let yourselves go and have fun.  When your children help with the construction the level of involvement is even greater and there is a sense of pride in the fact that they helped accomplish something.

Prefabricated Playhouses:

If you are not so sure of your carpentry skills you can always select a playhouse from the toy store and you can assemble it in no time from the instructions given.  Most prefabricated playhouses are highly durable and weather resistant.  You will be hard pressed to choose because the range of options is very wide.

Plastic Playhouses:

Are very inexpensive and easy to assemble and can be used in and out doors.  They come in very bright colors and have things like furniture and cabinets pre-molded inside them.
The most fun you will have is if you build a playhouse from scratch and since your child wants a raised playhouse, you will have to choose this option.

Outdoor Playhouse Plans

                                                         Outdoor Playhouse Plans

When you decide its time to build a playhouse for your kids, you are taking on a huge project and you need to be absolutely certain that you are capable of following the outdoors playhouse plans provided online.  Quite a few sites provide free plans for you to download and the plans are inclusive of a detailed materials list and instructions for building the playhouse.

As the project is a fairly extensive one you need to study the plans carefully to make sure you understand well what is expected of you. Then print out everything that is provided in connection with the outdoors playhouse plans.  Now decide who will be your assistant because you are definitely going to need a helping hand; maybe your dad or a brother can help.

It is recommended that you construct in stages and make sure you have a good quality tarpaulin to cover your work when you finish for the day.  Prepare to spend at least a week on the project and do check out the zoning and building laws in your area, the norm is that you will not require any permission to build on your own property but it is always a good idea to make sure.

Prepare all the necessary tools and materials prior to starting the project so that you are well equipped and won’t need to dash off to the hardware store for forgotten items.  Add a cutting guide to help you make those perfectly straight cuts and buy only galvanized nuts, bolts and screws.  You can always check the site from which you got the outdoor playhouse plans for information on the tools and materials required to build the playhouse.

Prepare the ground first, clear away any plants and stones and level it out.  Then prepare the outer frame using wood that is qualified for outdoor use.  When you have the frame ready, use a rake and again level the ground.  You will need to put down a polythene sheet first and then put the frame on top of it; this will prevent plants from growing up under the playhouse and damaging the structure.

Follow the plans to make the inner frame joists and then the plywood floor.  Now construct the walls, cut each wall to the right size and when you have them all ready, nailing them into place securely.  The rear wall should be put up last and made secure with wall studs (proportionately cut pieces of wood that will be nailed between two joists for added support) nailed horizontally, halfway up the wall.  When preparing the walls don’t forget to make provision for the windows.  The more windows the playhouse has the better ventilation and light it will have.  The front wall should have the doorway cut out of it.

You can always make a porch with a railing following the outdoor playhouse plans and then make the roof and complete decking of the floor and sheathing of the walls.  Painting and decorating will be the final stages of the project.

There are plenty of online sites that provide free playhouse building plans and there a several sites that charge very nominal amounts for a set of building plans that comes complete with plans, materials list, instructions and pictures, safe working practices and tips, all for as little as $5.  You need to spend some time browsing the internet to find the best option for your children.

If you plan to bring in the professionals then you can choose an elaborate design and go for broke; however, if you are planning to build the playhouse yourself it is advisable to choose something less flamboyant, a design that is easy to follow and simple to build.  You can always add embellishments to make it look grand once the basic structure is completed.

Choose a playhouse building plan that is sturdy and durable, your aim when building should be for it to last a good few years and provide much pleasure for your children. Always make sure that the playhouse is big enough to house a group of children comfortably because your children will have friends over to play.  At the same time the playhouse should not be so big that it conflicts with the main house or spoils the look of your garden.

When building the playhouse you will need to make provision for storage space so that your kids can store that books and games in the playhouse.  The room should be wide enough to take a table for the children to use for their activities and chairs or beanbags for seating.  If the space is not too large, you could always make provision for seating by fixing drop down seats affixed to the walls.

When buying the lumber, buy good quality wood and if need be you can give them the measurements and they are sure to oblige you by cutting it for you.  For the exterior walls and roof a less expensive and more durable alternative is cement fiberboard.  It makes it less complicated if you use the same material for both.  In its favor cement fiberboard siding is easily available and growing rapidly in popularity.  A user friendly, strong product that is fire, insect and rot resistant and the best thing about it is that it looks good.  As cement fiberboard can pose a health risk it is best to get all possible information about it before you buy it.

Some safe working practices you can apply to your building project:

  • Always make sure you have ample ventilation when working outdoors
  • Before using your circular saw make that the dust bag is attached to it.
  • Wear a dust mask
  • Check the material safety sheet provided by the manufacturer before using it.

Take every precaution when following the playhouse plans and happy building!

Free Playhouse Plans – Building Made Simple

Free Playhouse Plans – Building Made Simple

Providing a playhouse for your children is good idea because the benefits are many, for starters you get them out of the house and your hair, they learn to become independent, they also learn to take care of property and maintain it because it is in their best interests to do so.  Calling in a professional carpenter to draw up plans and construct the playhouse can come expensive. The alternative is to find free playhouse plans that you can use to build the playhouse.

There are many sites on the internet which offer excellent free playhouse plans.  All you need to do is download them and print them off and you’re ready to go. There are simply loads of free playhouse plans available that you can choose from.  The sites include drawings, equipment needs, materials required and the actual putting together instructions, tips and advice.  What more can you really ask for?

Playhouse plans give design and details for the house to be erected on a flat level site.  If this is not possible with the land you have available, embed the posts as deep as possible and for a sloping site making sure they are all the same height at the top.  It is recommended however, that you keep the playhouse as close to the ground as possible for safety.  The timber you use to embed in the ground should be water resistant and highly durable; you don’t want rot of any kind to set in and weaken the structure, where it will collapse one day and pray God your kids are not inside.  Your timber merchant would be the best person to guide you when buying the wood and make sure that all the nuts and bolts are made of galvanized steel or metal.

Even though you get the playhouse plans free, if you have absolutely no idea about construction and cannot tell a screw from a nut, don’t touch it.  Call in the professionals, sure it will cost you but you can have something simple made according to the plans you download.  If on the other hand you are quite confident of building the playhouse then go for it but make sure that the free playhouse plans you download are as detailed as possible to help you out.  The plans should include the materials list and as I mentioned a step-by-step guide that you are confident of reading, understanding and following.  It would be good if the plans included color designs of the different stages of construction.

Always involve your kids, its going to be their playhouse and their input will be valuable.  It will make them feel important and responsible as well. Make sure all your measurements are perfect, if you are not sure measure again and again if necessary until you are absolutely sure.  The sensible way to go about building the playhouse would be to start out by getting all the materials you require in accordance with the free playhouse plans specifications.  Thereafter it is a simple matter of studying the plans and following the step-by-step instructions.

Playhouse Plans – Building Right

Playhouse Plans – Building Right

Your kids are demanding a playhouse, ‘because every one has one daddy’, so what do you do?  Wondering where to start and how to please all the kids?  Tough one all right!  Use the tips in this article to put up a playhouse your children will love and become a hero in their eyes while you are at it.

You can find lots of sites online that offer playhouse plans, some for free and some for a price.  If you don’t find what you are looking for, there’s always the option of building a playhouse with a plan that comes right out of your head, if you are good at carpentry that is.

Before you start building it is recommended that you consult your kids to find out what their ideas are regarding the playhouse.  Sure pandemonium will reign but you can get them organized and let them tell you what they want.  This really should be the basis of your construction because at the end of the day the play house if for them.  Moreover their involvement will make them feel important.

Here are some guidelines to consider when making your playhouse plans.

  • The most important aspect of the playhouse is safety.  Your children who no doubt are extremely precious to you will be playing inside a great deal of the time and you don’t want their safety compromised in any way.  If you choose solid materials to build the playhouse the weight alone will hold it down steady.  Of course you can always give it additional support should you so desire.
  • Always choose a spot in the garden that is far away from the house for starters because of the noise levels that are sure to emanate from inside.  Also make sure that when you construct the playhouse it is turned away from the direction of the wind.
  • Level the spot you have chosen by raking it over and clearing away all the debris and small stones; it is advisable to choose the most level spot you can find to start off with.  You don’t want to end up with a lopsided playhouse now do you?  Once this is done, you can start on your playhouse plans.  Most plans recommend 2×6 joists made of treated lumber, you will have to take careful measurements and lay them out correctly before nailing them together.  You could put plywood sheeting over the joists to give the kids a smooth surface to walk on.
  • The next step in the playhouse plans will be the walls, which you will need to build similar to the walls of any house.  It is best to create them as individual walls and then put them up by nailing them in place.  Once the walls are up move on to the roof, most playhouse plans suggest a gabbled roof, make sure you take into consideration the climatic conditions of the place where you live and the fact that your kids will be climbing onto the roof at some point. Then move on to decking or adding plywood panels to the roof and sheathing adding plywood panels to the walls.  A tin roof, vinyl roof, roof felt and asphalt are the options for completing the roof.

Now that the playhouse has been successfully completed, move on to painting and there’s no limit really to what you can do in terms of finishing touches.

Kids Outdoor Playhouse Plans

Kids Outdoor Playhouse Plans

Are you feeling frustrated because you can’t tear your children away from the television?  Do you want them to play outdoors and get some fresh air?  Children today seem quite content to spend their time in front of the television when they have nothing exciting to do. This article will outline for you a fantastic idea on how to get your children outdoors.  Build them an outdoor playhouse that they can have hours of fun with.

Children are by nature fun loving and hyper active, to say nothing of being adventurous and great actors. If you get yourself a set of kids’ outdoor playhouse plans and build them a playhouse, they will be absolutely thrilled with the idea.  No more make believe with cardboard boxes and playing under the living room table.

You can get the children involved in the project and stimulate their learning and creativity.  When they are outdoors they remain active and healthy, something they are not going to be if they are seated in front of a television or computer all the time.  So go online and find a set of kids’ outdoor playhouse plans and get started on building them a playhouse.

You can find an interesting array of plans that include all the instructions for building the playhouse, the tools you will need and the materials you will use.  Take a walk around your garden and find a good sheltered spot, preferably at the bottom of the garden, so that they feel a sense of freedom and at the same time you get to keep an eye on them unobtrusively.  Another consideration when choosing the ideal spot is to make sure it gets plenty of natural light, otherwise you may have the added chore of putting in electricity.

When deciding on the type of kids’ outdoor playhouse plans you want to use, consider what sort of house you want to build, something out in the open or a sort of hideaway playhouse to add to the spirit of adventure.  Make sure that your design does not conflict with your existing structures.  When you select the site think about the seasonal changes and weather conditions and what effect if any they will have on the playhouse.  Call your local zoning office and check on whether you will require municipal permission to put up the structure.

There are a large number of designs and playhouse styles available on the internet so take the time to browse and research thoroughly to pick the best one that satisfies all the criteria detailed above.  The kids’ outdoor playhouse plans that you choose should blend in with your existing structure and also be something your children are going to enjoy.  The playhouse may not quite match your house but that’s alright, some contrast will make it more interesting.  Get your children to vote on the final decision of which design to go with.  Think about the inside and the type of furniture you will need to buy; maybe you can put in drop down seating or get a kid’s table and chairs; beanbags for seating is another option you can consider.

Whatever you choose let it reflect your children’s taste and imagination!

Playhouse Plans – the Easy Way to Build a Playhouse

Playhouse Plans – The Easy Way to Build a Playhouse

By Andy Duframe

This summer it’s going to happen. I’ve got plans to build a real playhouse in the backyard. Although my kids seem happy enough with the houses they make from cardboard boxes, I want something that will last through the summer, and hopefully next summer too. Plus, I know the kids would go nuts to get a real playhouse this year.

I’ve checked out the ready-made playhouses that the big toy companies sell, and boy do I really hate them. Aside from being pricey, they just look trashy. Last thing I want is a big piece of plastic sitting in the middle of the yard. Looking at some of the larger wood swing set kits, this is more along the lines of what I had in mind, but these are just too expensive to buy.

That leaves me to build a something myself. So now I’m looking at playhouse plans on the Web. I can’t say I’m very happy with what I’ve found. Of course I’ve checked out all the free playhouse plans first, hoping to at least get an idea of what’s involved with this kind of project. It’s looking a little scary so far. Most plans seem to be written by carpenters, who toss around construction terminology as if I were right there beside them on a job site. So I’m off to do a little research in how playhouses are built so I can figure it out for myself. Keep in mind that I’m not looking to build one of those giant-sized playhouses – the ones that are so big you could rent them out as an apartment.

Making a Playhouse Safe

Let’s talk safety first. Of course I don’t want something that will fall over with the first gust of wind. Not that I let my kids play outside during a storm, but whatever I build has to be pretty darn solid for me to feel comfortable letting them play there without me. From the plans I’ve seen so far, looks like the weight of the materials alone will be heavy enough to keep the playhouse standing upright, without me having to mount it to anything. That’s good news.

Getting Started – Make a Level Spot in the Yard

Most playhouse plans start with choosing a good spot in the yard. That makes sense. This step seems to help set the stage for everything else that follows, so it pays off to be careful and get this part of the project right first time out. Of course, to avoid building a crooked playhouse, I’ll need to find a fairly level spot in the yard. This could be trickier than it seems. Even if I think a spot looks level, chances are it’s not. I probably spend a good amount of time and energy just clearing and leveling a spot for the playhouse to sit.

Building the Playhouse Floor

After clearing and leveling a spot in the yard, most playhouse plans have me dive into building the floor. 2×6 treated lumber arranged in a grid-like pattern (joists) seems to be the favored choice of materials for this part of the construction, the same way it’s used in building floors for real houses. I can build the floor right on top of the spot I cleared in the yard, but I’ll probably put down a tarp first to keep the boards dry while I work on them. Building a floor that’s square at each corner will take some careful measuring and maybe a carpenter’s square to make sure everything is lined up. After that, it’s a matter of simply attaching the 2x6s together with galvanized nails. I’ll want a smooth surface on the playhouse floor for my kids to walk on, so that means laying down some plywood on the 2×6 floor joists. A couple 4×8 sheets of outdoor plywood should do the trick.

Building the Playhouse Walls

Building walls for a playhouse is pretty much the same method carpenters use to build a house. Using simple 2×4 studs, I’ll lay the boards out on the ground and create each wall as a separate unit. Then with some help from a friend I’ll raise the completed walls vertically and nail the corners together…just like people used to do when building barns.

Building the Playhouse Roof

While the playhouse floor and wall construction seems fairly straight forward, I think that the roof framing is going to be a little more complicated. Depending in which climate you live, a playhouse roof will get hit with rain, snow, and the sun, not to mention a few kids climbing on top of it, even though they were told not to. So I’m going to try my hand at a little construction carpentry and make a gabled roof. That’s what most of the playhouse plans call for anyway, so I’ll take on the challenge.

The good news about making a gabled roof is that you can buy some pretty inexpensive hardware that will essentially line up the roof rafters where you need them to go. Galvanized joist hangers will solve a lot of my problems here when it comes to hanging the rafters. There are plenty of instructions around for learning how to build a roof – for any kind of house, not just playhouses. So with the pre-made joist hangers and a few instructions, I think I’ll be able to figure out this part of the project without too much trouble.

Decking and Sheathing

Next comes the most rewarding part of the project: adding plywood panels to the roof (decking) and the walls (sheathing). For roof decking, most playhouse plans call for 1/2″ plywood panels that I’ll simply nail down on to the rafters. Getting at the panels to nail them down might be a little tricky, though. Some people suggest you go at them from inside the playhouse – with a step ladder poking up between the rafters. Then, after each each panel goes down, I’ll come down, move my ladder and go back up for the next section.

For the walls, a lot of playhouse plans call for 4′ x 8′ sheets of T-111 tongue-and-groove plywood, which should do a nice job of making the walls solid and weatherproof. I might also look into buying outdoor paneling with a decorative side – something to make the walls look more finished.

Finishing the Roof

I guess I haven’t decided yet exactly what I’ll put down on the roof decking. Most playhouse plans call for the same thing that’s on the roof of my house: roofing felt and asphalt shingles. That seems like a lot of work to me right now, so I might shop around a little for some easier alternatives. Maybe a tin roof or some type of vinyl. I’ll have to wait see about that.

Final Playhouse Touches

Well there’s really no limit to what I can add for final touches – everything from window shutters to picket fences to really dress up the project. Most playhouse plans I’ve seen have plenty of extras to make a simple playhouse pretty extraordinary. I have a feeling once I get the basic construction finished, the extra touches might have to wait till next year.
