Critics and audiences alike have reacted strongly to “Thalidomide!!! A Musical” which visits Norwich Playhouse on Friday September 22nd. It’s the edginess of the production that has attracted fibrand and creative consultancy Simon Middleton Company to back the show’s visit to the Playhouse.

“I’ve wanted to be involved in arts sponsorship since I started my company last year, and I have always planned to focus on things that are brave and unusual,” explained Simon Middleton, founder of the specialist creative and brand consultancy.

“Some people have considered this show to be in questionable taste, but you have to remember that it is written by and stars actor Mat Fraser, who is himself affected by Thalidomide, so he’s completely qualified to comment on the issues around the subject in whatever way he thinks appropriate. I think it’s an optimistic show about dignity and the reality of human life,” Simon added.

Mat Fraser, who also composed the music for the show, describes “Thalidomide!!!” as “a PC-free musical with a short-armed punch”, a description which hints at the kind of humour the play is built on.

Also starring Anna Winslet, sister of movie star Kate, Thalidomide!!! is on its way to being a sell-out show in Norwich, just one-stop on a tour which takes in many UK venues as well as the Orphee Festival in Versailles, France.

Simon Middleton Company, which provides brand consultancy and senior coaching to businesses and organisations, hopes to sponsor further shows at the Playhouse, and is also interested in hearing from other arts organisations about appropriate collaborations.

A playhouse plan is a must for woodworking to be child’s play (or at least, almost). You see, at the mention of ‘playhouse plans’, the average person would shy away, thinking that such a project would require tremendous and literally handy skills, not to mention loads of time. But the truth is, with a good playhouse plan, you can actually get the job done in a reasonable amount of time, as you wouldn’t have to dismantle things time and time again, nor spend hours figuring out the cuttings and all. Even better news is that you also get to save a lot of money. Here is what you should keep an eye out for when you are looking for plans for your playhouse project.

Level of Detail

You are going to need clear, step by step instructions; something that the average man could understand (no heavy carpentry and masonry talks please). The plan should include a good many diagrams and pictures. The best plans have fully traceable patterns on the components that you would most likely have a hard time in. There should be no room for your imagination, a sin the case of incomplete plans where you would be required to have a guessing game of sorts about what the author of the said plans were trying to say.

Kid-Proofing

You are going to need plans that would result to a project that is reasonably kid-proof. The playhouse should be durable; you don’t want the structure crumbling down while your little girl is making imaginary pancakes in the playhouse kitchen. It should also be waterproof, and built on level terrain.

The Whole Deal

The playhouse plan should include a bill of materials so you would have an easier time material-hunting, a cutting list for the assembly to be as stump-free as possible, suggested construction notes from master carpenters to give you alternatives and suggested finishing techniques to help you make the playhouse look attractive for the kids. Ornate balconies, anyone?

You don’t have to be a full-fledged do-it-yourselfer to get that playhouse up. All you need is a little online shopping savvy to get your hands in a database for playhouse plans and you’ll be on to your woodworking project in no time.

Arts Briefs: Flat Rock Playhouse box office is open for individual ticket sales

In this year’s Project Playhouse fundraiser there’s a new team on the block. The Ocean Adventure Lab is one of seven playhouses currently on display at the Irvine Spectrum Center through September 5, 2010. Built by a “consortium” of companies that value environmentally friendly design, the lab is one of two green entries in Project Playhouse’s 19-year-run.

To pronounce and celebrate the Ocean Adventure Lab’s greenness, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) – Orange County Chapter will present an Honorary Certification during a plaque ceremony on Tuesday, Aug. 10. USGBC is the organization behind the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.

Honorary Plaque Ceremony time and location: Project Playhouse Village at the Irvine Spectrum Center (99 Fortune Dr Irvine, CA 92618), near Macy’s from noon to 1 p.m.
The ceremony is open to the public, and RSVP is not required.
While the playhouses are not eligible for official LEED certification, the Ocean Adventure Lab is being recognized for its application of LEED principles and design and construction practices.
During the ceremony, the Ocean Adventure Lab will receive its kid-friendly bamboo plaque, and all LEED Accredited Professionals (LEED AP’s) who worked on the playhouse will be recognized with continuing education credits from USGBC National.

Project Playhouse is the signature, annual fundraiser for HomeAid Orange County — the founding chapter of a national non-profit organization with mission to build and maintain dignified housing where homeless families and individuals can rebuild their lives.

More playhouse than dollhouse, everything about the Ocean Adventure Lab points to learning, having fun and caring for the environment –both at sea and on land. Inside the lab, one finds a working wave tank, microscopes, oceanography books, a working projector featuring underwater sea creatures, and a Playstation 2 (Ps2). Designers worked with the Ocean Institute in Dana Point to get everything just right.

Sustainable features of the playhouse include:

Use of locally manufactured and rescued materials in addition to those made with recycled contents.
Use of drought-tolerant, California native vegetation.
A truth wall which exposes the contents of the green playhouse –100% natural wool insulation, piping, and a structure made of composite wood.
Energy efficient luminaires and LED lighting.
Panels and a sliding door comprised of Trex Accents, which gives the appearance of wood without the inconvenience of splinters. Trex is made of 95 percent recycled materials.
Source of renewable energy in the form of Suntech Black Label photovoltaic solar modules on the roof. This makes the playhouse a net zero structure, which means it produces as much power as it consumes.

“It’s been estimated that on any given weekend, the Irvine Spectrum Center has as many visitors as Disneyland. Thanks to Project Playhouse and the Ocean Adventure Lab, these visitors get to learn more about real world green building techniques, sustainability, and how they can help turn a playhouse into a home,” says LPA President Dan Heinfeld.

The two coolest things I ever made play with the coolest thing I made this week. Julian and Eloise consented to taking simultaneous two-hour naps, which allowed me time to make them this play house out of the box our grill came in. I modeled it after your basic Little Tikes playhouse, and they seem to love it just as much as the fancy ones. Watching them squeal and play with it for a solid half hour was immensely gratifying. Totally worth giving up my free time to carve up corrugated cardboard with a dull x-acto knife. It is still a work in progress. I have big plans. Skylights and curtains for the door window are next.

Found The Gardens via the internet. Wanted a house that we could park the RV beside. The reception that we got while visiting really sold us on The Gardens. Made us feel at “home”. It is the friendliest place I [Irene] has ever been. Tim Wilson, Developer, offered fully customizable house plans. Greg, the general contractor, was very helpful during the construction and we even made a few changes. Our garage has two entrances, one from the laundry room off of kitchen to load food. The other is off the master bedroom so we can load clothes with ease. Our garage is 67 feet long and 16 feet wide so we can park RV and towed vehicle. NO WINTERIZING the RV again. Crossville is extremely friendly. The Cumberland County Playhouse is really fun to go to. This small town has lots of activities. Cumberland Mountain State park is beautiful and on the edge of town. Tennessee has 53 state parks and they are many only 1 to 2 hours drive from Crossville.

The show has performed at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Gretna Theatre’s “Monday Night Series,” at Gamut Theatre Group as a “Core Company Spotlight” Production (the first such production at this company) and in an educational theatre residency experience at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. The show was workshopped at Penn State’s Outlaws Playwright’s Workshop and State College, PA’s Boal Barn Playhouse. It was developed as Campbell’s Honors Thesis in Theatre for Penn State’s School of Theatre and Schreyer Honors College. The show was a collaborative effort between Robert Campbell (Writer, Director, Editor, Designer, Producer, Actor), PSU Communications professor T. Martin Camden III (Cinematographer, Co-Editor, Story Consultation, Video Technician… “Marty” to his friends), and Marty’s wife Kelly (Producer, Story Consultation, Actor). It first appeared in workshop form in 2002 and had its professional debut (Philly Fringe) in 2003.
